Franco Brienza rescued a point for Reggina in stoppages at the Granillo after Roberto Sosa's opener.
The Azzurri were fresh from a 2-0 victory over Fiorentina, but knew their away record was a little less encouraging. Reggina seemed dead and buried a few weeks ago, but the arrival of new Coach Nevio Orlandi has seen them mount a shock comeback and the Amaranto had won the last two editions of this fixture, both by a 3-1 scoreline.
Bruno Cirillo, Mirko Savini, Maurizio Domizzi and Daniele Mannini sat out bans, while Marcelo Zalayeta, Gennaro Iezzo and Luca Vigiani were injured.
Edgar Barreto thought he had opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time, but the goal was correctly disallowed for an offside position.
It was an uneventful match with two teams unable to cause each other many problems. Franco Brienza's angled drive flashed across the face of goal and Ezequiel Lavezzi blasted well over.
Walter Gargano was booked and will be suspended for the game with Palermo.
Napoli finally broke through 14 minutes from time. Lavezzi held up Marek Hamsik's cross for Roberto Sosa to turn in from six yards.
It seemed to be over, but in stoppages Reggina snatched an equaliser with Brienza's fourth goal in a week. The January signing from Palermo smacked a fierce half-volley from the D after Nicola Amoruso had chested on the ball.
