Reggina finally celebrated their first win of the campaign with an important victory ovre high-flying Genoa.
Renzo Ulivieri admitted to being excited at his home debut for the Amaranto, having already impressed in a 1-1 draw at Napoli last week. Still the only side without a win this season, they needed points against high-flying Genoa, even though the newly promoted outfit hadn't won in four. Curiously, five of their previous six Serie A meetings here had finished with honours even. Former Reggina striker Marco Borriello was suspended and Ndiaye Papa Waigo injured, so the Rossoblu had to reshuffle upfront with Argentine Figueroa's first start.
Ivan Juric drilled just wide with his left foot from distance, but it was Reggina who broke the deadlock with Nicola Amoruso. He held off a rough tackle from former Reggina defender Alessandro Lucarelli to turn in the six-yard box and fire in at the near post. Amoruso refused to celebrate as a sign of respect for the Lazio fan who was tragically killed by a stray police bullet earlier today.
Danilo failed to make the most of Julio Cesar Leon's promising counter-attack and Leon curled a free kick over the bar.
On the stroke of half-time Figueroa had the opportunity to equalise with his debut Serie A goal, but nodded a Luis Fabiano cross just off target.
Leon remained Genoa's most dangerous player, his free kick shaving the frame of the goal.
Leon also provided the cross for Marco Di Vaio, whose header smacked against the upright from point-blank range.
Instead, Reggina doubled their lead 10 minutes from time. Luca Vigiani sprinted down the right and crossed in for Joelson's header, the Brazilian's first goal in Serie A.
Genoa did not give in, as Andrea Campagnolo and some desperate defending denied Giuseppe Sculli.
