Serie A Week 37 - 11/5/08 (14.00 UK)
Reggina 2 - 0 Empoli
Barreto 68 (R), Amoruso 79 (R)
Stadio Granillo

Reggina are safe from the drop, but Empoli face a dramatic final round to discover their destiny.

It was crunch time for two of the bottom three teams, realising this result could decide the fate of the relegation battle. Reggina had won three of their last four, while Empoli had just three points from as many games. Salvatore Aronica and Alessandro Budel sat out bans, while this top flight fixture had never ended in a stalemate with three home wins and one for the Tuscans in 2006.

Davide Bassi rushed off his line twice in quick succession to close down Franco Brienza and Nicola Amoruso, then Brienza dribbled past three players to bring a tough save out of Bassi's outstretched foot.

Ighli Vannucchi had Empoli's first opportunity with a free kick just past the near post on 25 minutes.

Ciccio Cozza should've given Reggina the lead on 41 minutes, but he blasted over after Bassi parried a Brienza shot into his path.

Campagnolo parried a Claudio Marchisio left-foot screamer from the edge of the box.

Bassi did well to smother a Cozza free kick, but Reggina took the lead with an absolute corker. Edgar Barreto has made a habit of scoring blockbusters and he unleashed a rocket from 35 metres that smashed into the top corner.

Empoli reacted immediately as Marchisio's daisy-cutter skimmed the upright, but Nicola Amoruso ran on to Luca Vigiani's through ball, cut back past Marzoratti and hit a left-foot finish past Bassi.
