Milan can only qualify for the UEFA Cup, as Fiorentina's late victory in Turin made this result futile.

Fourth place was in the balance, but the Rossoneri had done themselves a lot of damage last week by losing at Napoli to see Fiorentina overtake them and go two points clear. To achieve a Champions League preliminary round spot they had to beat Udinese and hope the Viola stumbled away to already-safe Torino.

Handily, Udinese were in the UEFA Cup and for some weeks had seemed on holiday anyway, but were eager for revenge after Alberto Gilardino's stoppage-time winner at the Friuli earlier this season. Alessandro Nesta and Gennaro Gattuso were suspended, while Marcos Cafu and Serginho said their goodbyes to San Siro.

Udinese got off to the best start, as Antonio Di Natale skipped past Daniele Bonera to test Zeljko Kalac, then Andrea Dossena hit the side-netting. Milan fought back with Pippo Inzaghi just failing to get on the end of Kaka's assist, but Kalac required a stunning reaction save to deny Fabio Quagliarella's header.

Kaka was the Rossoneri's liveliest player, but he wasted a good opportunity from six yards, while Massimo Ambrosini ballooned over.

The Friulani took a deserved lead on 32 minutes, as Giandomenico Mesto comfortably waltzed past Giusepe Favalli at the byeline to fire in with his left foot from the tightest of angles. Naturally, this prompted jeers and protests from the Milan fans.

Samir Handanovic did well to rush out and smother the ball at Inzaghi's feet, as the home side tried to fight back.

The Rossoneri should have equalised at the end of a well-worked team move between Clarence Seedorf and Massimo Ambrosini, but Kaka incredibly scuffed wide from the penalty spot.

Alexandre Pato and Cafu were thrown on for an all-attack formation in the second half. It certainly worked, as within three minutes he had tapped in Kaka's ball across the face of goal from six yards to equalise.

However, moments later Gokhan Inler tested Kalac on the counter and Quagliarella's free header was well over. It was a different game now, though, and Inzaghi was twice denied by desperate last-gasp Handanovic interventions.

Inzaghi turned it around completely with his 100th in a Milan jersey. Ambrosini's cross was chested down by Pato for Inzaghi's left-foot half-volley from close range.

Kaka went on a blazing solo run that tested Handanovic, but on 69 minutes Inzaghi was brought down by Zapata as both tried to get on the end of an Andrea Pirlo free kick. The referee pointed to the spot, but first Handanovic saved Kaka's weak attempt, then Inzaghi hit the rebound on to the crossbar!

Fiorentina had taken the lead, but in a fitting finale Cafu scored on his final appearance for Milan, thumping in an angled drive on the volley.

Seedorf also got his glory, combining with Kaka to slide a left-foot shot past Handanovic, but it mattered little with the Viola winning in Turin.
