Omar Milanetto missed a penalty for Genoa, who then had to fight back for a 1-1 draw with Livorno.
These two sides have had a very poor start to the campaign. Genoa were without a single goal and just one point, while Livorno had lost both games by conceding a total of nine goals. Marco Amelia was handed back the goalkeeping gloves after he was dropped for last week's 4-2 defeat to Palermo.
This was their first meeting since a 1-0 Livorno victory in the 2003-04 Serie B campaign.
Erjon Bogdani had the first chance after a couple of minutes, but didn't get enough power on to his header from Jose Luis Vidigal's cross.
The referee pointed to the spot in controversial fashion, as Marco Borriello appeared to push Grandoni off the ball at the by-line, then the Livorno defender grabbed his shorts to return the favour. Justice was served, though, as Omar Milanetto smashed his penalty on to the crossbar.
That affected his confidence, as Milanetto also wasted a good chance created by Marco Di Vaio.
Pulzetti and Vidigal threatened for the visitors, while Giuseppe Sculli's solo run was cleared with some difficulty by the Livorno back line. In a surprise switch, Coach Gian Piero Gasperini replaced Sculli just 33 minutes in to introduce N'Diaye Papa Waigo and the former Cesena man almost scored immediately with a header.
Rubinho was forced into a terrific save on Massimo Loviso's free kick before half-time.
Massimo Bega brought down Giovanni Pasquale at the end of a splendid solo run ad the referee pointed to the spot again. This time Francesco Tavano was accurate into the bottom near corner.
Genoa drew level with a move sparked by Papa Waigo and Rossi crossed for a glancing Borriello header. That was the Grifone's first goal of the season.
Pulzetti hit a powerful long-range effort inches over the bar, then Konko and Borriello failed to get enough accuracy on their headers.
Marco Amelia had to keep his wits about him when a set-piece took several deflections and he flapped Di Vaio's backheel off the line.
The referee had no patience for simulation, as in the final minutes he handed out second bookings to both Juric and Vidigal for diving.
