| A sensational Marco Borriello individual goal was the highlight as Genoa continue their fine form. Both these sides have won the Scudetto in the past and were mid-table going into this weekend, although both fear they will be fighting against relegation by the end of the season. Genoa were undefeated since the Week 1 drubbing by Milan and welcomed back Rubinho from his ban. Cagliari's victory over Siena lifted the pressure after losing three of their previous four games.
Marco Borriello's early effort was parried and his header from a corner kick struck the side-netting, as the Grifone were pinning Cagliari back into their own half. Matteo Paro combined with Julio Cesar Leon to test Marco Fortin, but Genoa only broke through on the hour mark with Borriello - scoring his fifth goal of the season. Leon went on a slalom and threaded through for Borriello, who flicked the ball up into the air with his right foot and smashed in a fantastic volley with his left. Fortin got down low to push Leon's free kick round the base of the post, then Marco Di Vaio skipped past two defenders only to swerve the shot wide. Di Vaio scored his first Serie A goal for Genoa, as Konko's low cross was turned in by a precise left-foot finish. |
