| Empoli won their first home game since February, but still went down to Serie B.
This Tuscan derby had an air of desperation about it, as while Livorno were already doomed to Serie B, they could at least have the satisfaction of dragging their local rivals down with them. Even a win might not have been enough to salvage Empoli, who also had to hope Parma and Catania lost to make it out of the drop zone. It was no small feat, especially as the Castellani side hadn't won on home turf in six games, but Livorno had never won here in Serie A or B with just two draws and a 2005-06 defeat.
Francesco Tavano faced his former club and was probably the only Livorno player left with a point to prove. Antonio Busce' should have put the home side ahead, but he wasted a golden opportunity one-on-one. Empoli opened the scoring with Busce'. Luca Antonini sprung the offside trap just past the centre circle and rolled across for the unmarked Busce' to tap in following a disastrous rush off his line from Alfonso De Lucia. At this moment in time and with the scores elsewhere, Empoli were safe. Antonini had a couple of long-range efforts, but straight after the restart Luca Saudati was hauled back by his shirt for a penalty. The veteran took it himself and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, but hit the post! Saudati made up for that howler with a glorious lob with the outside of his left foot on Budel's assist to make it 2-0. Alessandro Diamanti came off the bench to set up a tense finale, as he scored with an absolute block-buster of a left-foot shot from all of 30 metres that smacked into the far top corner. |
