Serie A Week 2 - 2/9/07 (14.00 UK)
Catania 0 - 0 Genoa
Stadio Massimino

This was an historic occasion, as the Stadio Angelo Massimino opened its doors for the first time since police officer Filippo Raciti was killed in rioting on February 2. Catania were banned from hosting fans in their stadium after that tragic incident. Their reputation took another beating last week, though, as Coach Silvio Baldini kicked Parma boss Mimmo Di Carlo up the backside in a touchline brawl and is suspended until September 30. Cristian Silvestri sat out the second of a two-match ban.

Genoa needed a good performance after their 3-0 hammering at the hands of Milan. Cesare Bovo, Salvatore Masiello, Marco Borriello and Coppola were injured and Mirco Gasparetto was sold to Chievo on the last day of the transfer window.

This fixture had not been played in Serie A since a 2-1 Genoa victory on April 21, 1984. Andrea Sottil only got to play seven minutes before he caught his studs in the turf and was stretchered off.

Gionatha Spinesi hit a powerful effort off target, but Ndiaye Papa Waigo really should have done better when presented with the goal, hesitating to allow the Catania defence to clear.

Deep into first half stoppages, Papa Waigo rose to get his head to a looping Fabiano cross and turned it on to the base of the near post.

There were few real scoring opportunities in the Sicilian heat, but once again it was Papa Waigo who went close. On 74 minutes he narrowed the angle too much and could not get the finish on target after going round the 'keeper.

Genoa did hit the back of the net late on, but it was disallowed for a push. Danilo shoved Gazzola in the back as Rossi's cross was floated in, so the Catania defender fell on to the upright, taking the ball with him.
