Cagliari and Catania shared the spoils in this Derby delle Isole.
This was an early survival clash at the Stadio Sant'Elia and the Sicilians were more confident going in, as Cagliari had lost three of their last four games. Catania also won here 1-0 last season and were unbeaten in three rounds.
The visitors broke through after 11 minutes when Giuseppe Mascara curled a free kick into the six-yard box for Christian Terlizzi's precise glancing header that left Marco Fortin rooted to the spot.
Cagliari were unlucky not to draw level on 36 minutes, as Daniele Conti's free kick took a touch off goalscorer Terlizzi and smacked against the crossbar.
The Sardinians grabbed a deserved equaliser within 40 seconds of the restart thanks to Alessandro Matri's free header at the back post from Fini's cross.
Joe Bizera risked a comical own goal with his messy clearance, while substitute Tedesco drilled just wide for Catania.
Fortin flew to prod a dangerous Mascara free kick out from under the crossbar.
Cagliari really should have taken the lead on 78 minutes when Matri set up Conti, but the captain fired straight at Polito. Soon after there was another dangerous opportunity with an acrobatic Polito reaction save on Conti's header.
