| Marco Borriello lost the Capocannoniere crown at the final straight, as he failed to catch up to Alessandro Del Piero.
Both sides have done better than expected this term, finishing just below the race for a UEFA Cup spot, but all eyes were on Marco Borriello's bid to be crowned Capocannoniere. Yesterday Alessandro Del Piero took himself to 21 goals and the Genoa star had not hit the back of the net since April 13, partly due to a niggling injury.
Giampaolo Bellini and Jose Leonardo Talamonti sat out bans, while Costinha, Moris Carrozzieri, Antonio Langella, Matteo Paro, Domenico Criscito and Antony Vanden Borre were sidelined.
Borriello scuffed an early chance, but Atalanta took the lead when Sergio Floccari hooked down a long Guarente pass to lob the helpless Alessio Scarpi. Just before the break Genoa could have equalised, but Daniele Capelli was ready for a decisive goalline clearance on Gaetano De Rosa's header. Floccari went close to a brace and Capelli fired wide of an open goal. Genoa were reduced to 10 men on 66 minutes when Danilo picked up a second booking. Doni hit the crossbar with one of his trademark free kicks, but Genoa lost another player as Milanetto saw red. Michele Marconi scored his debut Serie A goal, as the 19-year-old was able to tap in to an empty net. |
