| Atalanta twice fought back to salvage a point against Cagliari, but Riccardo Zampagna did double damage. The Orobici were keen to hold on to their place in the top half of the table, but the Sardinians were equally eager to clamber free of the relegation zone. Atalanta were still unbeaten in Bergamo going into this game and fresh from a 1-0 victory away to Empoli, but Moris Carrozzieri was suspended. Cagliari continued to do without Diego Lopez and Marco Pisano.
The visitors hadn't won here in Serie A since a 1-0 result on October 27, 1991 and last season the tie ended with a thoroughly entertaining 3-3 scoreline.
Daniele Conti nodded a Michele Fini cross over, while Cristiano Doni's free kick threatened. Before half-time Doni had another good chance, a header that was punched out of the top corner by Marco Fortin. Yet it was Cagliari, who were without an away win in over a year, who took the lead. Riccardo Zampagna's clumsy handling offence allowed Fini to convert from the penalty spot. Just before the break Cagliari threatened a second, as Under-21 international Robert Acquafresca nodded Alessandro Budel's free kick on to the upright. There was controversy straight after the restart. The referee had initially awarded a penalty for Pellegrino's challenge on Acquafresca, but his assistant pointed out he got the ball and the decision was changed to a corner. Atalanta equalised on 55 minutes when defender Capelli went up for a corner and his glancing header slotted in to the far bottom corner. However, the Sardinians restored their advantage with Alessandro Matri. Ferdinando Coppola parried a Parola strike from the edge of the area, but only into the path of Matri. Atalanta would not give in and captain Doni curled a free kick over the wall to make it 2-2 in a dramatic match at the Stadio Azzurri d'Italia. Having already given away a penalty, Zampagna ended his nightmare game with a stoppage-time dismissal. |
