| Siena fought back from a goal down at half time, netting twice in four minutes to sink Chievo. The second round of League fixtures kicked off this weekend and both these teams were perilously close to the wrong end of the table. Siena were without a win since October, while Luciano sat out a three-match ban and Victor Obinna returned from suspension.
Mario Beretta had the opportunity for revenge against the club that fired him in 2005, but first he had to end Siena's appalling record, having lost all three home games against Chievo in Serie A. Erjon Bogdani only moved from Siena to Chievo last week, but immediately came face to face with his former teammates.
Matteo Brighi's snapshot was beaten away by an acrobatic Alex Manninger save. The Chievo midfielder did even better soon after, pouncing on a woeful Leandro Rinaudo clearance to fire in from the edge of the area. Siena finally began to threaten just before the break with Daniele Portanova's header captured on the line. The home side threw on veterans Enrico Chiesa and Ciccio Cozza, Sicignano having to rush out and close down the ex-Reggina man from six yards. The pressure paid off with a fine goal from Luca Antonini. The counter-attack was sparked by Cozza, but the ex-Sampdoria midfielder placed a perfect angled drive into the far corner. Siena turned the game around completely four minutes later. A Chiesa corner kick found defender Portanova's powerful header under the bar to give the home side the lead for the first time. Marchese, Chiesa and Cozza brought saves out of the goalkeepers in the closing stages with long-range efforts. |
