David Di Michele was in inspirational mood as Palermo ran riot against sorry Torino to continue their Scudetto hopes, but the forward was stretchered off.
The Rosanero welcomed 14th placed Torino in a game they were expected to win if they were to maintain their Scudetto challenge, especially as the Granata had just four points from their last five rounds. This tie hadn't been played in Serie A since October 1972, a 2-1 home win.
Toro had the first chance after four minutes, as Stefano Fiore, Roberto Stellone and Alessandro Rosina combined for an angled drive easily saved from the Under-21 international. Moments later Fabio Simplicio's snapshot skimmed the far post. Palermo's Brazilian wasted a golden opportunity, scuffing Mattia Cassani's assist from close range.
It was a scintillating start at the Stadio Barbera, as after nine minutes Torino hit the upright with Rosina's screamer fingertipped on to the woodwork by Alberto Fontana.
Eugenio Corini was furious on 19 minutes, as he sprung the offside trap and claimed he was pushed over by Gianluca Comotto, but the referee waved play on. An audacious David Di Michele lob was over and the former Udinese striker also went close on a Corini assist.
Christian Abbiati did well to beat away a deflected Mark Bresciano effort, but the deadlock was eventually broken just before half-time.
Corini was in the right place at the right time, redirecting a wayward Fabio Simplicio strike from six yards for his sixth goal of the season.
Into the second half and Amauri's attempt was parried into the path of Fabio Simplicio, whose follow-up clattered into Brevi.
Only the bravery of Granata defender Comotto managed to keep them in the game. Fabio Simplicio got in front of Abbiati and flicked Di Michele's pass over his head towards an empty net. Palermo were already celebrating when Comotto's acrobatic overhead kick cleared the ball off the line.
Corini went off with an injury, but Palermo still managed to double their lead with Di Michele. He ran forward on the counter-attack and sent Abbiati to ground with a classy dummy before lifting the ball over the goalkeeper.
Di Michele is angling for an Azzurri recall and tried to be a little too spectacular soon after, controlling a long pass with the outside of his foot and toe-poking it into Abbiati's arms.
Amauri made the points safe in Sicily with Di Michele again involved, this time his through ball finding the Brazilian for a perfect angled drive with his right foot. However, Di Michele picked up a muscular injury during that move and was stretchered off.
Torino still didn't give in and Rosina's free kick came off the underside of the bar to bounce back out off the line.
