Serie A Week 20 - 21/1/07 (14.00 UK)
Livorno 1 - 1 Roma
Lucarelli pen 22 (L), Totti 74 (R)
Stadio Picchi (10,389)

Francesco Totti scored the equaliser at the Stadio Picchi, but he was also sent off as Roma slide 11 points behind leaders Inter.

Tension was sky high at the Stadio Picchi. Daniele Arrigoni made his 'comeback' on the Livorno bench after he was fired and re-hired in the space of 48 hours thanks to the protests of his players, while the Giallorossi knew they needed a win to close the nine-point gap from leaders Inter.

Sami Kuffour and Dario Passoni returned from bans, but David Pizarro and Daniele De Rossi were suspended for the visitors. Roma were unbeaten here in Serie A since a 2-1 defeat in March 1949.

Marco Amelia picked up an injury during the warm-up, though replacement Emanuele Manitta nearly handed Francesco Totti an opener with his dreadful clearance after a couple of minutes.

New signing Christian Wilhelmsson was lively in a wide right role and his early strike was charged down. Philippe Mexes wasted a golden opportunity on 15 minutes, as Totti's free kick was parried to his feet only for the defender to balloon over from six yards.

Cristiano Lucarelli was brought down by Matteo Ferrari in a soft penalty and the first kick had to be retaken due to encroachment, but the captain took the same near bottom corner and converted for a second time to give Livorno the lead.

Manitta turned a long-range Cristian Chivu snapshot out for a corner, then Amantino Mancini fired over on a Mexes assist. Christian Panucci got on the end of a free kick to turn over, while Manitta fingertipped a deflected Chivu effort round the upright.

Roma were more aggressive coming out for the second half, although Rodrigo Taddei wasted a couple of promising opportunities. Francesco Tavano made his Serie A debut for the Giallorossi, replacing Ferrari for an all-attack 4-1-4-1 formation sending Chivu back into defence.

Manitta performed a splendid reaction save on Mancini's volley after fine work from Totti and Taddei. Moments later Marc Pfertzel flung himself at another Mancini strike to deflect it over the bar.

Roma eventually grabbed a deserved equaliser with their symbol, Francesco Totti. Mancini threaded through for Wilhelmsson, whose low cross was flicked in from six yards by Er Pupone for his 13th goal of the season.

There were penalty appeals for a Mexes handling offence, but the extremely tense game exploded in stoppages. Totti and Fabio Galante clashes repeatedly and the Roma captain was sent off for taking his protests too far. He was even furious with his own personal trainer Vito Scala and pushed him to the ground as he was led away!

The Disciplinary Commission's report will be crucial, as if there's more than a statutory one-match ban, Totti could miss Inter-Roma.
