Serie A Week 17 - 20/12/06 (19.30 UK)
Lazio 0 - 2 Inter
Cambiasso 39 (I), Materazzi 85 (I)
Stadio Olimpico (35,203)

Inter are shattering records and taboos this season, conquering Lazio in the capital after a decade despite Zlatan Ibrahimovic's controversial dismissal. It's a result that automatically crowns the Nerazzurri Campioni d'Inverno (Winter champions) for 2006-07.

The Nerazzurri aimed to make it 10 straight Serie A victories, but they hadn't won here since a 1-0 result on March 3 1996 and famously lost the Scudetto at Lazio in a 4-2 defeat in May 2002. Ex-Biancocelesti boss Roberto Mancini was missing the injured Walter Samuel, Patrick Vieira, Ivan Cordoba, Fabio Grosso, Olivier Dacourt and Julio Cruz, while Tommaso Rocchi and Massimo Mutarelli were banned.

Lazio had the first real chance after seven minutes when Marco Materazzi's scuffed clearance fell straight to Stephen Makinwa, though Julio Cesar performed a good save on the Nigerian's curling right-foot finish.

Ex-Biancocelesti man Hernan Crespo should've done better when he blasted over from the edge of the box and the same went for Esteban Cambiasso.

Makinwa had penalty appeals waved away for a Materazzi nudge in the back, while Cambiasso combined passes with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and his finish was deflected off target.

Crespo wasted an absolute sitter on 37 minutes, as Ibra chested on Dejan Stankovic's cross and Angelo Peruzzi ran out to narrow the angle, but the Argentine's delicate lob was incredibly wide of an open goal.

Inter were pushing hard and took the lead moments later. Crespo burst between two defenders and prodded the ball across for Cambiasso's first-time finish from seven yards.

There was controversy in first half stoppages, as Ibrahimovic was shown a yellow card for kicking the ball away after play had been halted for an offside position. That was his second booking of the game - the first for striking an opponent with his arm - and the Swede added another dismissal to his already red card packed career. Not only did it seem harsh as the referee whistled when Ibra already lined up for the shot, but the offside was also incorrect.

Massimo Oddo and Goran Pandev - a former Inter player - fired two chances over from the edge of the area.

Despite leading 1-0 and playing in 10 men, Mancini opted to introduce striker Adriano for defender Maxwell, moving Javier Zanetti to full-back. Julio Cesar had to flap away a dangerous Oddo cross from the right.

Inter were clinging on in the final minutes, as Julio Cesar performed two stunning saves to tip Oddo's dipping half-volley out from under the crossbar.

However, ex-Lazio youth product Materazzi rose to nod in a Luis Figo corner kick and make the result safe for Inter.
