| Hernan Crespo's goal proved enough to send Inter three points clear at the top of the table, but there were some worrying moments against plucky Reggina on Adriano's comeback. Top took on bottom at San Siro, although if it weren't for the 15-point Calciopoli penalty, Reggina would've been mid-table going into this game. The Nerazzurri had Zlatan Ibrahimovic suspended and welcomed Adriano back for the first time since his month-long Sabbatical to recuperate his form, albeit starting from the bench. The Amaranto had Alessandro Lucarelli and Giacomo Tedesco sitting out bans, while Nicola Amoruso was injured.
It took less than four minutes to break the deadlock with the all-Argentine front two. Cruz nodded the ball into the area, Patrick Vieira's header held it up for Crespo's powerful volley from seven yards. However, the Amaranto nearly equalised when Giandomenico Mesto slipped past Nicolas Andre Burdisso and his cross was pushed off Rolando Bianchi's head by a crucial Ivan Cordoba interception. Inter seemed to relax and Reggina were pouring forward with three chances in five minutes. Simone Missiroli's twisting header thumped the upright, then moments later Leon's right-foot strike brought a desperate save out of Julio Cesar. Penalty appeals were waved away for a Dejan Stankovic handling offence. They thought they'd equalised on 17 minutes, but Walter Samuel managed to perform a goalline clearance to keep out Modesto's header with Julio Cesar stranded. The Nerazzurri got out of their own half and remembered how to attack with Ivan Pelizzoli parrying Crespo's shot with his foot and Luis Figo's follow-up also threatened. Reggina Coach Walter Mazzarri was sent off on 37 minutes for dissent and Cruz's angled drive shaved the far post. His team showed impressive guts at San Siro with Salvatore Aronica's strike deflected off target. In the second half the visitors continued to push, as a poor clearance fell to Tognozzi and his strike brought a fantastic save out of Julio Cesar with his trailing hand. Cruz limped off with an injury, so Adriano made his comeback a month after taking his Sabbatical. Reggina kept on going and a cross went past everyone until substitute Rios drilled over, while Crespo pounced on a defensive error and his shot was deflected over by Giosa. Reggina thought they'd equalised on 76 minutes when a long-range Tognozzi effort took a deflection off Bianchi to send Julio Cesar the wrong way, but it was disallowed for a tight offside decision. |
