| Inter fought back from Luca Toni's opener to notch up a 13th straight win and fly 11 points clear at the top. The 12 consecutive Serie A victories were a new record and the Nerazzurri hoped to extend it further by welcoming Fiorentina. Luca Toni and Esteban Cambiasso both bagged braces in their Week 1 meeting, which ended 3-2 for Inter, but Fiorentina were without the suspended Tomas Ujfalusi and Adrian Mutu, so switched to a 4-5-1 system. This tie had not ended in a draw since a 2-2 result in November 1996.
Julio Cesar woke up in the morning with a bad back, so former Fiorentina legend Francesco Toldo faced his old club. Withi five minutes he was picking the ball out of the net, as Nicolas Andre Burdisso lost his marking on a Fabio Liverani free kick, allowing Toni a free header from six yards. Adriano had penalty appeals waved away, a free kick instead given against him for a handling offence. Liverani was causing all sorts of problems and Toldo had to flap away his dangerous cross-shot. But Inter equalised with a well-worked team move. Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Adriano combined, the Brazilian waiting for Dejan Stankovic to complete his run through the middle for a fierce strike into the top corner that left Sebastien Frey motionless. The Nerazzurri turned it all around in the space of five minutes. Stankovic and Ibrahimovic touched on a free kick for Adriano to smash home from just outside the area, although a deflection off Marco Donadel may have left Frey stranded. Moments later Martin Jorgensen drilled over the bar from distance and Toldo captured a Toni header. Cesare Prandelli made a tactical switch after only half an hour, but it wasn't entirely as expected, striker Giampaolo Pazzini coming on for the impressive Liverani. Pazzini combined with Jorgensen, but was cut short by Javier Zanetti's experience in the area. The change certainly worked, as the Viola were pinning Inter back into their own half towards the break, Toldo fouled by Alessandro Gamberini as they both went for the cross. Into the second period and Toldo rushed out to clear from Toni's feet and Toldo blocked a Pazzini effort. Prandelli had started the game with a lone striker, but by the hour mark was using a trident with Pazzini and Reginaldo. However, Inter went 3-1 in extremely controversial circumstances. Stankovic's free kick found Ibrahimovic, who had two headers flapped away by Frey, but the linesman insisted the second effort had crossed the line. Even the camera footage was inconclusive, as if it was over, then it was a matter of millimetres. Substitute Olivier Dacourt had a snapshot saved, but Fiorentina had given up by this point. |
