| Cristiano Doni continues to be inspirational for Atalanta in this crushing victory over Livorno. The Orobici had the opportunity to leapfrog Livorno in this head to head clash for ninth place, but the Tuscans hoped the Christmas break came at the right time to end their run of two points from five fixtures. Dario Passoni and Sami Kuffour were suspended for this trip. This tie had never ended in a Serie A draw before with six home wins and two away.
Bellini's daisy-cutter was charged down, then he volleyed the ball just past the far post after combining with Cristiano Doni. Ferreira Pinto and Knezevic clashed heads violently and the Livorno defender came off with the worst of it, stretchered off for Fabio Galante. Atalanta took the lead with talismanic figure Doni before the break. He exchanged passes with Riccardo Zampagna and unleashed a fantastic right-foot screamer with the end of his foot. Doni made it 2-0 in first half stoppages, stepping away from Grandoni to get enough space for a free header on Adriano's cross from the right. It was a dismal debut for ex-Messina midfielder Carmine Coppola, as the January signing was sent off for a second bookable offence on Adriano. However, despite playing in 10 men, Livorno got back into the game. A wonderful Cristiano Lucarelli curler came off the crossbar and into the path of Marc Pfertzel. It didn't last long, as Massimo Donati dribbled through three defenders and place a low drive into the far corner to restore Atalanta's two-goal cushion. The Orobici ran away with the match, as Adriano's cross was touched by Zampagna for an Amelia save into the path of Luca Ariatti. Davide Bombardini came on for the tired Doni, but pounced on a defensive error only to fire wide from point-blank range and soon after his free kick smashed against the upright. Livorno also hit the woodwork, as Lucarelli's set-piece came off the crossbar. Substitute Nicola Ventola completed the humiliating 5-1 rout with a precise header from six yards. |
