| Juventus sank Siena with three goals in the opening eight minutes to maintain their slender three-point lead over Milan. All eyes were on the Stadio Artemio Franchi, as Juventus had their lead cut to just three points and desperately needed to end their seven-match winless streak in all competitions if they were to fight off Milan's Scudetto challenge.
The media in Italy focused on the fact Siena's squad was packed with Juve-owned players, such as Tomas Guzman, Nicola Legrottaglie and Matteo Paro. Igor Tudor, Rej Volpato and Roberto D'Aversa were sidelined, while the Turin giants had Mauro German Camoranesi suspended.
Juventus had won both their previous Serie A trips here, while Siena were without a win in six, so it seemed the perfect setting for Fabio Capello's men to end their crisis. Following his poor form, Zlatan Ibrahimovic was dropped in favour of Alessandro Del Piero.
The Turin giants came out fighting and took the lead within the opening three minutes, as Patrick Vieira rose to nod in a Pavel Nedved corner kick from six yards.
Just 100 seconds later, David Trezeguet made it 2-0 for Juventus. It was a classic counter-attack and Ciccio Colonnese's tackle on Del Piero only served to hand the ball to Trezeguet for a powerful low strike from the edge of the area.
Siena fought back and Gianluigi Buffon had to perform a smart save on Vergassola's long-range effort.
However, it was Juve who scored their third goal in the first eight minutes! Adrian Mutu completed another smart counter-attack created by Del Piero and Vieira.
The scoreline stunned Siena, but they kept trying to get back into the game with Enrico Chiesa testing Buffon on a couple of occasions.
Gianluca Zambrotta closed down Tomas Locatelli with some difficulty and, from the resulting corner, Chiesa's shot took a deflection off Locatelli's heel to slam the upright with Buffon stranded.
Siena were pouring forward in droves and Buffon flew to palm a Locatelli effort over the bar, then Matteo Paro drilled a free kick off target.
Chiesa was the last Siena player to give in and had another good shot over the bar after the break.
Siena were very unlucky on 66 minutes when they rattled the frame of the goal for the second time this game, Chiesa's free kick beating Buffon but not the crossbar.
Marco Fortin needed a fine one-handed save to tip Del Piero's effort over the bar.
