| Cristiano Lucarelli's brace - including a controversial penalty - gave Livorno the bragging rights in the Tuscan derby after Luca Toni saw his spot-kick saved. Carlo Mazzone made his home debut on the Stadio Picchi bench and did so against his former club in a heated Tuscan derby. Fiorentina were fresh from a 2-1 win over Inter, while Livorno had drawn six of their last seven games. Luis Jimenez was given the nod to support Luca Toni after his winning goal on Wednesday, while Christian Brocchi was out with a fractured nose.
Toni struck the side-netting with a header as Marco Amelia mistimed his run on a free kick into the centre.
There were worrying moments on the half-hour mark, as Fabio Galante clattered into teammate Jorge Vargas and the Chilean was badly winded, requiring emergency help from the linesman to clear his airways.
Bogdan Lobont flew across the face of goal in first half stoppages to fingertip a Cristiano Lucarelli free kick round the post. It was the first real save either of the goalkeepers had made.
However, in the final kick of the first half, Vargas was punished for a handling offence inside the area, as the ball rolled off his chest and on to his outstretched arm. It didn't matter whether the foul was intentional or not, as Amelia saved Toni's penalty to keep Livorno level going into the break. That was the eighth spot-kick the Amaranto have given away this season.
Valeri Bojinov was thrown on in place of Stefano Fiore to help out the isolated Toni for the second half.
Diego De Ascentis drilled over the bar and Bojinov's free kick was not far off target.
The referee pointed to the spot again, but this time it was in favour of Livorno for Per Kroldrup's tiny nudge on Colucci's back. To make matters worse, Dario Dainelli was sent off for a second bookable offence for dissent. Lucarelli converted into the bottom corner of the net to give the Amaranto the lead.
The tempo was raised and Lobont rushed off his line to close down Morrone and Lucarelli ensured the points were safe with his 14th goal of the season.
The Livorno born and bred striker scored with a great low volley on Colucci's chipped pass that slotted into the far corner. Lucarelli marks his 200th Serie A appearance with his 80th goal, having made his debut in Atalanta’s 4-2 win over Bologna on August 31, 1997.
