Serie A Week 28 - 5/3/06 (14.00 UK)
Livorno 0 - 1 Cagliari
Suazo 77 (C)
Stadio Picchi

David Suazo ended a 27-match winless streak away from home with this shock victory at Livorno's Stadio Picchi.

Carlo Mazzone came face to face with his old club, but had no time for sentiment, as Livorno were challenging for a UEFA Cup space and Cagliari were battling against relegation. The Sardinians had Bega and Agostini suspended.

Livorno dominated the early play with Cristiano Lucarelli eager to mark his 100th official appearance in the Amaranto jersey with a goal.

A Diego De Ascentis piledriver from the edge of the box whistled just wide of the upright.

Colucci's backheel sent Stefano Morrone running and his shot was charged down for a corner kick. From the resulting set-piece, Fabio Galante's attempt was also blocked, as Cagliari were pinned back into their own half.

Nelson Abeijon claimed he was elbowed in the face by Fabio Galante in the penalty area, but the referee waved play on.

Lucarelli had a fantastic chance after the restart, but his stunning overhead kick from eight yards was inches over the bar.

Cagliari finally came out of their own half with a promising David Suazo counter-attack, but Massimo Gobbi horribly scuffed his finish.

The game sprung to life after a dull opening 45 minutes and Mauro Esposito did better on Suazo's assist, forcing Marco Amelia into a save with his legs on this angled drive.

Morrone's half-volley thumped the upright, though it wouldn't have counted as the flag was up for an offside position.

Cesar Prates held up the ball for Lucarelli's angled drive, then Antonio Chimenti performed a fine save on last season's Capocannoniere. Cesar Prates was again the provider and this time the goalkeeper stuck out a leg to parry his low drive.

Incredibly, it was Cagliari who took the lead against the run of play. Suazo was the scorer with a powerful finish from eight yards, but much of the credit goes to Gobbi, who ran up the field dribbling past three tackles to set up the Honduras international.

The Sardinians could've sealed up the points beyond doubt when Esposito crossed for Antonio Langella, who drilled over the bar with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Substitute Bakayoko's stunning solo effort was fingertipped over the bar by an equally impressive one-handed Chimenti save.

In stoppages, Suazo crossed in for Capone, who somehow fired straight at the goalkeeper from point-blank range.
