Serie A Week 28 - 5/3/06 (14.00 UK)
Fiorentina 2 - 1 Siena
Toni 3 (F), Vergassola 15 (S), Pazzini 91 (F)
Stadio Artemio Franchi

Giampaolo Pazzini's last-gasp winner sealed a passionate Tuscan derby, although Siena had more than enough chances to cause an upset.

The Tuscan derby came to the Stadio Franchi and it was a crunch tie for both sides. Fiorentina needed a victory to stay in the race for a Champions League position and build on last week's 4-2 win at Parma, while Siena were not entirely safe from the drop zone. It was a special occasion for Enrico Chiesa, who returned to face his former club.

It took less than three minutes for the Viola to take the lead with Capocannoniere Luca Toni. Much of the credit goes to Stefano Fiore, who ran rings around a defender and placed a low cross for Toni to tap in from a couple of yards. The Siena players protested for an offside position, but replays show he intelligently avoided that trap.

Valeri Bojinov failed to make the most of a Christian Brocchi assist in a promising position by ballooning over the bar.

Marco Fortin was at full stretch for a splendid fingertip save on Toni's header from a Manuel Pasqual cross, then as the move continued the goalkeeper was again tested by Fiore's strike.

However, Siena equalised with their first real chance. Tomas Ujfalusi slipped and Chiesa's relatively soft shot was spilled by Bogdani Lobont into the path of the unmarked Simone Vergassola to tap in.

Chiesa's free kick was just past the top corner of the net, then Bojinov's volley was charged down from close range.

Siena were more dangerous after their goal and went close to another when Tomas Locatelli nodded wide from a Chiesa cross, while Toni's volley was blocked by Colonnese's stomach.

Paolo Negro really should've given Siena the lead on the stroke of half-time, but his angled drive was well wide of the near post.

After the restart, Bogdani took advantage of Dario Dainelli's defensive error and sprinted towards the net, forcing Lobont into a great save.

Luis Jimenez came on for Fiorentina, moving Brocchi back into central midfield, but Siena continued to threaten and Per Kroldrup managed to squeeze Matteo Paro out on the counter-attack in a one-on-one situation.

There was bad news for the Viola, as Michele Pazienza fell awkwardly in a clash with Paro and suffered a knee injury. The midfielder was stretchered off and made way for Martin Jorgensen.

Bojinov's solo run was wasted by a poor first touch from Toni, but the current top scorer was substituted after his international duty midweek and replaced by Giampaolo Pazzini.

Pasqual's deflected cross reached Pazzini 11 minutes from time and Pazzini's volley was stopped short by the crossbar.

Jorgensen curled wide of the far post, but at the other end Legrottaglie's header shook the roof of the net.

Fiorentina restored their lead in the final minute with a chaotic goal. A free kick was scrambled off the line with a couple of Fortin saves before Pazzini pounced on the loose ball from a yard to turn it past a sea of legs.
