| Empoli continue to climb up the table after this comfortable victory over Reggina.
Reggina boss Walter Mazzarri had worn the Empoli jersey during his playing days and came back to Tuscany looking for crucial points in the battle to avoid relegation.
However, Empoli have won all their home games apart from the defeats to giants Juventus and Milan, so they were the favourites to take the victory. Francesco Tavano went close almost immediately, forcing Nicola Pavarini to rush off his line to close down.
Indeed, the Stadio Castellani side took an early lead with Christian Rigano's 100th goal in professional football. Tavano and Christian Rigano' combined before Antonio Busce's volley took a decisive deflection off Rigano's heel.
Reggina fought back with Gianluca Berti parrying a point-blank Luca Vigiani effort, while Milan-owned Nicola Pozzi was on fine form and found space between a crowd of defenders to place his shot inches past the post. Pavarini also held an Almiron strike.
The goalkeeper was kept busy with a stunning double save on the unstoppable Pozzi, as both his attempts were pushed out by Pavarini.
There was more bad news for the Amaranto, as talented youngster Missiroli limped off with a suspected sprained ankle and replaced by Simone Cavalli on the stroke of half-time.
Tavano nearly made it 2-0 with the last kick of the first half, but his sweeping right-foot finish was palmed away with difficulty.
Reggina have already lost Rolando Bianchi for the entire season, while Zetulayev and Nicola Amoruso are sidelined, but ran out of strikers completely when substitute Cavalli suffered a thigh strain. They had to throw on 18-year-old youth team player Ceravolo to fill the gap.
Tavano thought he had scored the second soon after when he sprung the offside trap and lobbed the on-rushing goalkeeper, but his finish was inches wide of the open goal.
Ceravolo skipped past a challenge and drilled an angled drive wide of the target when he perhaps should've passed across for teammate Francesco Cozza.
But it was Tavano who finally found the back of the net after several attempts. Rigano' created the move down the right flank, shrugging off two challenges and rolling across for Tavano to tap in at the near post.
Vigiani's looping header settled on to the roof of the net, but Empoli were dominating and Bonetto's close-range shot was charged down by the goalkeeper.
The Tuscans completed the rout for Reggina's heaviest defeat of the season. In stoppages Serafini held up a cross for fellow substitute Igli Vannucchi to turn in from eight yards.
