Serie A Week 28 - 5/3/06 (14.00 UK)
Chievo 2 - 2 Lazio
Mauri 32 (L), Tiribocchi 42, 45 (C), Oddo pen 66 (L)
Stadio Bentegodi

Simone Tiribocchi's brace was not enough to beat Lazio at the Stadio Bentegodi in this crunch match for European ambitions.

Lazio Coach Delio Rossi claimed this match was more important than the Rome derby, as it was a head to head battle for UEFA Cup spots. The Biancocelesti have been in the news for all the wrong reasons since losing 2-0 to Roma last week, as stars such as Massimo Oddo and Fabio Liverani publicly voiced their displeasure with the current set-up. The Flying Donkeys were without the injured Sergio Pellissier and suspended Victor Obinna.

Chievo went close after just nine seconds of play, as Simone Tiribocchi won back the ball in midfield and sprinted towards goal, forcing Angelo Peruzzi to rush off his line to clear with his legs.

At the other end, Goran Pandev threaded through for Liverani, who dummied a defender only to see Alberto Fontana parry his shot.

There were penalty appeals for Lorenzo D'Anna's handling offence on a Stefano Mauri cross, but it was not considered to be voluntary.

Ousmane Dabo's strike was pushed round the post by a combination of Fontana's save and a Giuseppe Scurto goalline clearance, then Pandev had another promising opportunity for Lazio.

The Biancocelesti went close again with Tommaso Rocchi mis-timing his volley on a Massimo Oddo cross, hitting it with his thigh and allowing Fontana to make a tricky save.

Lazio eventually took a thoroughly deserved lead on 32 minutes, as Luciano Zauri followed a loose ball and chipped in the cross for the head of Stefano Mauri, his first goal since the January move from Udinese.

Amauri's low drive was off target, but Chievo's equaliser came soon after. A free kick was deflected into the path of Tiribocchi from eight yards, who swept it into the far corner of the net. There was some controversy about this goal, as Fabio Moro was in an offside position directly in front of Peruzzi and therefore in an active role.

Nonetheless, Chievo turned the game around completely on the stroke of half-time. Franco Semioli drilled past Zauri on the right flank and crossed in for Tiribocchi's strike.

After the break, Peruzzi kept the scoreline down by beating away Franceschini's daisy-cutter, then Amauri's header was just wide.

Igli Tare replaced Pandev and, within 10 seconds of coming on and before he had managed to touch the ball, the Albanian was dragged back by Scurto for a penalty. Oddo stepped up to bury the penalty, sending Fontana the wrong way with a relatively central kick to equalise for Lazio.

Three minutes from time, Tare couldn't quite finish off a counter-attack from Valon Behrami.
