Serie A Week 38 - 14/5/06 (14.00 UK)
Chievo 0 - 2 Fiorentina
Toni 21 (F), Dainelli 85 (F)
Stadio Bentegodi

Luca Toni's 31st Serie A goal of the season has given Fiorentina fourth place and a spot in the Champions League preliminary round.

This was a crunch match, as victory would secure fourth place for the Viola, regardless of Roma's result against Milan, but Chievo were celebrating their UEFA Cup spot and did not want to make it easy for them, especially as Coach Cesare Prandelli had been in charge of their local rivals Hellas Verona from 1998 to 2000. Giuseppe Scurto was suspended for the Flying Donkeys, while Lorenzo D'Anna and Federico Giunti were injured.

Chievo had a great chance after three minutes when Franco Semioli's corner kick was not cleared effectively, but none of his teammates could make the most of the loose ball.

The home side again went close with Bogdan Lobont performing a desperate save on Mandelli's bullet header from a corner kick, tipping it out from under the crossbar.

However, it was Fiorentina who took the lead with a fortunate goal. Stefano Fiore's strike from distance slammed the upright and Luca Toni was in the right place at the right time to tap in from six yards, taking his tally to 31 goals.

Manuel Pasqual's missile and an Amauri effort threatened, while Sergio Pellissier had a goal disallowed for a very tight offside position.

Amauri couldn't make the most of Luciano's low cross, but Fiorentina wasted a good chance on the stroke of half-time when Toni couldn't make the most of a loose ball.

Into the second half, Valeri Bojinov's angled drive was just wide of the near post.

Amauri wasted a golden opportunity to equalise with a weak header after he had sprung the offside trap, while substitute Simone Tiribocchi blasted well over.

Fiorentina secured the win and fourth place with five minutes to go when captain Dario Dainelli leapt up to nod in Stefano Fiore's curling cross to the back post. The Viola fans staged a peaceful pitch invasion at this goal, so play was halted for several minutes while calm was restored.
