Lippi gives Cassano a little hope
Sunday 23 November, 2008

Marcello Lippi has left the door open for Antonio Cassano's return to the Italy squad, but “no more than anyone else.”

The Sampdoria starlet is on fine form at the moment and bagged a brace plus an assist in today's 3-0 victory over Catania.

He has not been called up for the Azzurri for World Cup qualifiers or friendlies since Lippi took over from Roberto Donadoni.

“Cassano? All players from 18 to 40 have to prove themselves and dream of a place in the Italy side,” commented the Coach.

It is hardly an endorsement, but nor does it slam the door permanently on Cassano's international career. When asked if Amauri is in his plans, Lippi was again vague.

“I will only consider him when he has Italian citizenship, not before. I only work in the technical side of the sport.”

He was more precise when discussing last night's Derby d'Italia in which Inter defeated Juventus 1-0.

“I saw an excellent Inter side, who were laid out effectively to face a team like Juventus. Jose Mourinho's defenders and midfielders worked very hard.

“However, I would not talk of them breaking away at the top, despite the fact I do consider Inter to be the strongest squad.”

Yesterday the draw for the Confederations Cup put Italy in Group B along with Brazil, Egypt and USA.

“I had dreamed before the 2006 World Cup in Germany of facing Brazil in the Final, but our paths did not cross,” he told Rai Sport.

“Now it will be a pleasure to meet them both in February's friendly and the Confederations Cup. Do not forget Egypt are also a very dangerous side in that competition.

“We can improve as a team and above all go through that process against great sides. However, let us remember the primary objective is qualifying for the 2010 World Cup. Some say it is easy, but football never goes according to plan.”
