Cannavaro wants Napoli again
Saturday 1 November, 2008

Italy captain and Real Madrid stopper Fabio Cannavaro has again opened the door for a return to hometown club Napoli.

The defender has consistently been associated with the San Paolo giants and the rumours have gathered pace following the Azzurri’s sensational rise to the top of the Serie A table.

“I’m a Napoli fan and always have been,” noted the veteran whose Real contract expires at the end of the current campaign. “It would be nice to play for them again.

“I am well aware that the club are working excellently by focusing on young players and their current squad so it is just best for them to work in peace for now.”

The 35-year-old, whose brother Paolo also plays his football in Naples, started his career with the Vesuviani after graduating through the youth ranks and made his Serie A debut as a 19-year-old in a 4-3 loss to Juventus.

“I remember everything about my first spell at Napoli, from my very first game to the last,” continued the World Cup winner.

“They were incredible years for me because as a kid wearing the Napoli shirt was always the dream which I had.”

A financial meltdown in Naples saw his enforced sale to Parma in 1995 before he joined Inter in 2002 and Juve a year later.

He left Turin in 2006 as a result of the club’s Calciopoli enforced demotion.
