Wednesday 19 November, 2008 |
| Ireland Coach Giovanni Trapattoni believes his team can overhaul Italy at the top of World Cup qualifying Group 8.
Trapattoni's side have made an excellent start to their campaign and, like the Azzurri, are unbeaten.
Former Italy tactician Trap must wait until April 2009 for an emotional date with his native country, but he has no fear of the world champions.
Can we overtake Italy at the top of Group 8? Why not? the 69-year-old told the Irish Independent.
Italy are in a very difficult situation at the moment. They have been dealing with lots of injuries and don't have as many options as usual.
They are the world champions, but I saw their games against Cyprus and Bulgaria and I think they are the same strong team when the players are fit, but if they lose a couple it becomes hard for them.
While Italy travel to Greece this evening, Ireland's friendly sees Poland visit Croke Park.
