UEFA President Michel Platini has hailed Fiorentinas spirit of fair play during their cruel defeat against Rangers last week.
The Violas hopes of reaching the UEFA Cup Final were heartbreakingly dashed when they lost on penalties to Rangers at the Stadio Artemio Franchi after 180 minutes of football ended goalless.
Despite their despondency, the Fiorentina players formed a tunnel and applauded the Scots off the pitch in one of many gestures of sportsmanship the Gigliati have displayed this term.
Fiorentinas players gave us a heart-warming display of true sportsmanship and respect in forming a guard of honour as a tribute to the Rangers players after the Scottish club won a dramatic penalty shoot-out, Platini said on UEFA.com.
In addition, the club showed outstanding hospitality to thousands of Rangers supporters, including many without tickets, by making food, entertainment and public viewing of the match available outside the Stadio Franchi.
The fact that Rangers fans have contacted both Fiorentina and UEFA to pass on their appreciation for the welcome extended to them in Italy is testimony to the great efforts made by the Italian club and its directors, and to the respect between the two sets of fans.
It gives me great pleasure to see that the values of fair play and sportsmanship are still present at the very highest level of the game.
Fiorentina should serve as an outstanding example to other clubs, to young footballers and to supporters everywhere.
The Tuscans are already known for their refreshing attitude, exemplified by Coach Cesare Prandellis refusal to criticise referees in the media.
