Melo doesn't regret brawl
Thursday 7 May, 2009

Fiorentina attacking midfielder Felipe Melo insists he doesn't regret brawling with Cagliari defender Diego Lopez.

The two players got into a nasty fight in the tunnel after Fiorentina beat Cagliari 2-1 on April 11 and subsequently received five match bans.

An appeal reduced Melo's suspension to three games, making him available for this weekend's match against Catania.

When asked to explain what happened with Lopez, Melo replied sarcastically: “I entered the tunnel, he was there waiting for me.

“I said goodbye and he said goodbye. We exchanged telephone numbers and just like that we became friends.

“Seriously that chapter is closed. I don't want to go into detail, but you must know three things,” Melo told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I didn't start anything, I didn't provoke him, I didn't do anything and he knows it. In three years in Spain I was sent off only once.

“If something of this nature were to happen again I would do the same thing. But I know that it will never happen again,” he explained.

When asked why he had not yet apologised to Lopez, Melo replied: “I won't do it, because I don't believe I was wrong.

“I know perfectly well that the bible says turn the other cheek, but we are made of flesh and blood and it's not always possible to pretend nothing happened.

“If I receive a slap here, I cannot go back to my three children with marks on my face like I were a coward…

“I can't wait to play again. It's been a tough three weeks, but I have seen a strong Fiorentina with a desire to win that makes me proud,” he said.

“Now we are thinking about winning as many games as possible. If we win and Juve lose we have a chance of making third place, but we need to think about fourth and Genoa, who are showing themselves to be a great team.”
