Canna: I don't miss Italy
Tuesday 6 May, 2008

Azzurri captain Fabio Cannavaro has no nostalgia for his time in Serie A and no intention of returning to the peninsula.

The former Juventus defender quit Italy for Real Madrid in the aftermath of the Calciopoli scandal.

Despite regular rumours linking him with a return to his homeland, it seems that the 34-year-old, who has just won La Liga, isn’t coming back.

“I don’t miss Italy at all,” he said in Vanity Fair. “I’m not thinking about returning at the moment.

“I made a choice to play for a great club here in Spain and I have no nostalgia for the past.

“I hardly watched any Italian football last year. Inter were so much better than anyone else and the title was decided from day one.

“This year it is more pleasant with Napoli and Juve in Serie A, but technically the level isn’t the same as it was pre-Calciopoli.”

Cannavaro is clearly still hurt by the events off the pitch that shook Juventus’ players and fans.

“There is a lot of bitterness,” he admitted. “It was such suffering to see the Bianconeri penalised like that.

“I was 32-years-old and I couldn’t have been playing below the top level during the last few years of my career. Besides, Real are a team you cannot say no to.”

Fabio concluded by discussing the possibility of joining brother Paolo at Napoli.

“It would be difficult for Napoli to sign me,” he explained.

“They would have to wait for my contract with Real to expire because they wouldn’t be able to pay a transfer fee for a 34-year-old.”
