Serie B: Week 38 review
Monday 5 May, 2008
The second highest scoring weekend in Serie B this season saw Chievo maintain their three-point lead at the top ahead of Albinoleffe.

Chievo know they will be playing in Serie A next season. With four games remaining the Veronesi are yet to be assured of automatic promotion, but after demolishing Spezia 5-0 the players - who, at the end of the game, celebrated wildly under the Curva - are clearly confident.

Sergio Pellissier scored twice in the opening 10 minutes, giving Spezia's young stand-in goalkeeper Ivan Dazzi a torrid time. The home side were 3-0 up at half time and, instead of sitting back, set about humiliating their prey with a penalty from Victor Obinna and Simone Bentivoglio's fifth of the season.

Far from being intimidated, Albinoleffe's 3-1 victory at Piacenza was a real show of force. The Bergamaschi were ruthless, capitalising on two Biancorossi errors in the first half, which practically granted the visitor's their 11th away win of the campaign, equalling the record held by Chievo, Juventus and Perugia.

Lecce slipped to fourth place after the referee did everything to help Mantova get something from their trip to Puglia. Luca Palanca sent off two Giallorossi players, denied Lecce a penalty and gave one to the Virgiliani in a match that ended 1-1.

Bologna took advantage of Lecce's misfortune, leapfrogging the Salentini into third place after a gutsy showing against Vicenza. Greek defender Vangelis Moras scored the only goal, giving a true warrior's performance, clearing shots off the line, making last-ditch tackles and playing on despite injury.

Elsewhere in the play-offs, Brescia proved once again that, on their day, they are one of the best sides in the Cadetti, destroying Modena 3-0, a result that sucks the Emiliani into the relegation battle. Avellino pulled themselves two points clear of the drop-zone after beating Pisa 3-1. The Tuscans haven't won in eight matches.

Avellino could be back in the bottom four sooner rather than later once Treviso re-play their game against Grosseto, which was postponed after a police officer attempted suicide outside the Stadio Omobono Tenni.

Cesena's 5-2 defeat at Frosinone leaves them four-points adrift at the foot of the table. Ravenna's great escape continues, Ferdinando Sforzini's 50th minute strike gave Coach Franco Varrella his third victory in four games as the Emiliani went on to beat Messina 1-0.

In mid-table, Bari - who are now safe from relegation - appeared to be on holiday in Ascoli, losing 2-0 after a Stefano Guberti double, while Rimini and Triestina gave their fans a treat. Rimini took the lead, were pegged back, went ahead, Triestina equalised again only to score an own-goal which gave the Biancorossi the confidence to go on and win 4-3.
