Spalletti's double danger
Sunday 4 May, 2008

Luciano Spalletti is resisting the temptation to keep an eye on San Siro, instead warning Roma not to lose sight of Antonio Cassano and Juventus.

Although they are not mathematically out of the Scudetto race, the Giallorossi risk being overtaken for second place by Juve.

“This team has the possibility of finishing second and that may not have a trophy with it, but it gives you access to important competitions, increases visibility and helps the club to grow,” said Spalletti.

The Bianconeri are just five points away from that second automatic Champions League qualifying spot and could close the gap further today when Roma visit on-form Sampdoria.

“Second is an important prize, but until the mathematics rule us out, we have to keep the idea of catching Inter alive in our minds.

“There’s no point looking behind us now, as we must accept how this season has gone. Perhaps having another two or three players in times of need would have made a difference, though.”

Francesco Totti, Rodrigo Taddei and Matteo Ferrari have not made the trip to Marassi, but Roma will face their former star Cassano.

“Antonio will be a constant danger. He is very talented at putting the ball past the defence when nobody expects him to.

“It’s going to be something the defenders must think about, because when Antonio starts one of his moves it is difficult to stop him. He is so creative and invents on the spot, so we have to be prepared for anything.”

Spalletti was in charge of the Roma squad for the bitter final six months of Cassano’s time there, as contract renegotiation rows meant he barely played before moving to Real Madrid.

“From a professional point of view I regret not being able to make more of his qualities. A champion needs to be a step above off the field as well, as inevitably those who are talented with the ball at their feet are viewed in a special way by their teammates. A player must set the example.”
