Gennaro Gattuso has begged Carlo Ancelotti to stay at Milan, even though it feels like a losing battle. “Hope springs eternal.”
The Coach is expected to move on at the end of the season after eight years in charge, as the likes of Chelsea, Real Madrid and Roma are eager to snap him up.
“Hope springs eternal,” Gattuso told Milan Channel. “The team is behind him, he has been our Coach for many years and there is a special rapport.
“It will be down to the boss and the club to reach an agreement and of course we all hope they achieve that.
“Every day I feel like I know everything and the next I change my mind completely. I think it’s right that we discuss this at the end of the season.
“If the Coach does leave, then these will have been wonderful years together. We will begin a new era without forgetting that Milan have to start winning again.”
This Sunday afternoon could be an historic day for the Rossoneri, as it is their final home game of the season against Roma.
A victory would mathematically qualify them for the Champions League proper and it’s believed Ancelotti is waiting for this certainty to announce his departure.
It will also be Paolo Maldini’s last Serie A match at San Siro, as the 40-year-old captain is hanging up his boots after 25 years at the club.
“It will be very moving to witness the end of his career,” continued Gattuso. “I will always treasure our times together and so do my teammates.
“Maldini is a great champion and a fantastic teammate. I think the right definition for him is ‘a gladiator’, a player who when he pulls on that armband and steps on to the field, he gives absolutely everything. He’s a great example for everyone even when he isn’t playing.”
While newspapers in Spain continue to suggest that Kaka will be going to Real Madrid, Gattuso is sure this is one Milan man who won’t be waving goodbye.
“I am certain he’s staying.”
