Toni leads Rino charge
Monday 19 May, 2008

Bayern Munich striker Luca Toni has called his Azzurri teammate Gennaro Gattuso to the Allianz Arena. “I’d love to have him on my team.”

Toni enjoyed a fairytale first season in Germany as Die Roten eased to the Bundesliga title and the giant marksman topped the scoring chart.

However, after losing in the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup, Bayern are expected to strengthen for next season’s Champions League adventure and Toni knows who he wants to arrive.

“I told the directors that I would like to have some more Italians in the squad,” he revealed on his website.

“Partly so that I can have a bit more company but mostly so that they can help us make a leap in quality.”

Gattuso is being tipped to quit Milan as the Rossoneri look to restructure their squad after failing to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

“Rino is a Milan player who is under contract at San Siro and he will have to decided along with the club what is best to do,” Toni conceded.

“But in my opinion he is a great player and lots of Europe’s top clubs would really want him. I would really like to have him on my team.

“Last time I spoke to him was when he called to congratulate me on winning the Bundesliga and he asked me what life is like in Munich. But I haven’t got any meeting lined up with him in the near future.”

English sides Arsenal, Tottenham and Newcastle are also believed to be interested in Gattuso and may have the advantage due to Ringhio’s desire to try his hand in the Premier League.
