Massimo Moratti admits it is a very different feeling to be celebrating the Scudetto on his birthday. “It was a great present!”
The gift was given to him by Udinese, who beat Milan 2-1 on Saturday night to ensure Inter could not be caught.
“It is the first time I have celebrated a birthday with the Scudetto. The team did well to give me this great present,” smiled the patron who turned 64.
“It is also a gift that Udinese and Milan gave me or, if you like, Juventus last week, as I have to thank all of them too.”
It is an extremely rare occurrence in Serie A for a title to be won without stepping on to the field, but the Nerazzurri were watching Milan’s defeat on television.
“We have managed to win a title we certainly deserved and to a certain degree it was never in doubt,” Moratti told Inter Channel.
“It was wonderful to experience this extraordinary moment of joy together with the squad. These lads have made so many sacrifices over this season.”
Jose Mourinho was a risk when brought in to replace Roberto Mancini, but won the Scudetto at his first attempt.
“Mourinho had already won in England, he did very well with us too as the only foreign Coach in Serie A and was the first to lead the way by taking the team to victory.
“The fact we have been able to win for a fourth consecutive year shows how the team has a fantastic ability to adapt. We changed management, but the club kept an attitude that allowed Mourinho to do very well and the players maintained their motivation, which isn’t easy after three straight titles.
“I have to thank Mourinho, who was able to win such an important trophy in his first year in Italy with Inter, who are certainly not a club helped by anyone,” continued Moratti.
“I know his career tends to see two consecutive titles, so I hope he continues that trend with us too…”
The only thing Inter have not been able to do is lift the Champions League trophy, but the President was not too disappointed.
“Right now I couldn’t care less! It will arrive when it is meant to. You need luck as well in that competition and we will learn how to win it.”
