Two-horse race for Amauri
Thursday 15 May, 2008

Real Madrid may be out of the race to sign in-demand Palermo marksman Amauri after he revealed that he would rather stay in Italy.

Amauri’s future is shrouded in mystery after a baffling period of transfer speculation.

While the Brazilian hitman had looked all set for Juventus, his agent stated last week that he is just as likely to sign for Milan or Real Madrid, but now Spain is looking less likely.

“To play for a team like Real is an honour for any player, but I see myself playing in Italy rather than anywhere else in the future,” Amauri said.

“I have been here for eight or nine years and grown a lot in this country, so playing for a big Italian team would be fantastic for me.

“I want to know what it is like to fight for a Scudetto and the Champions League – these are the things I want to experience.”

Amauri has been accused of adopting a mercenary attitude as he continues to offer his services to the highest bidder.

“Of course money is important,” he conceded. “I have a family with two children and I obviously want the best for them and myself.

“The money counts, the team counts and the will to win counts – there are lots of factors that are important.”

The 27-year-old’s agent Mariano Grimaldi continues to claim that a host of top clubs are still eyeing Amauri’s signature.

“A number of very big teams from all over Europe have asked about him,” he maintained.

“My priority is to get the best deal I can for the player. Even 10 years ago I was convinced that could grow into one of the best players in the world and now I think that he will get the recognition he deserves within three or four years.”
