Seedorf pulls out of Euro
Tuesday 13 May, 2008

Milan star Clarence Seedorf has shocked Holland Coach Marco Van Basten by pulling out of Euro 2008.

Despite losing his place in the national side between 2004 and late 2006, the 32-year-old midfielder was expected to be a key figure for the Dutch side in Austria and Switzerland.

After an impressive campaign with Milan, Seedorf’s place in Van Basten’s 23-man squad was assured and he had been part of the 30-man preliminary squad that was announced last week

But it has emerged that the Suriname-born ace personally called the tactician to tell him he had decided to withdraw.

“I was surprised because I did not expect that,” Van Basten commented.

“I told Seedorf that I have the utmost respect for him as a man and as a footballer. But sadly he was immovable.”

The motives for Seedorf’s decision are so far unclear, but Italy boss Roberto Donadoni will be delighted not to have to face him in Group C.
