Di Vaio encourages Lippi
Monday 9 March, 2009

The form of Marco Di Vaio is yet more evidence of the depth of Italian football, according to Italy Coach Marcello Lippi.

Di Vaio, who will be 33 in July, scored a hat-trick for Bologna on Sunday and is Serie A's capocannoniere with 19 goals this season.

“He's doing very well,” Lippi told Italia 1 football show Controcampo. “It's not easy at 32. I am very happy for him.”

When asked if he would consider Di Vaio for La Nazionale, Lippi replied: “It's truly wonderful that there are so many players who are putting themselves forward, doing great things.

“There are even players with two passports putting themselves forward. Everyone from age 18 to 40, they all should dream about the Azzurri.

“After 2002 and 2004 it seemed people fell out of love with the Italy colours,” he said. “But at the end of the day, I cannot call up 50 players.”

Lippi trained Di Vaio when he was at Juventus between 2002 and 2004 where he scored just 18 goals in 58 appearances.

“He did not fail at Juventus,” Lippi concluded. “He just didn't succeed in expressing his full potential as he has done ever since then. But with Juventus he played, scored good goals and won the Scudetto."

Di Vaio has been capped for Italy on 14 occasions, the last of which came five years ago under Giovanni Trapattoni.
