Vucinic: Inter distracted us
Sunday 8 March, 2009

Mirko Vucinic reveals the reason behind Roma’s heightened tension against Udinese. “We were still thinking about Inter.”

The Giallorossi were played out a scrappy 1-1 draw and had Daniele De Rossi sent off for dissent.

“We were irritable because we were still smarting from the penalty incident with Inter,” confessed Vucinic, who scored the equaliser.

Last Sunday the 3-3 draw was marred by a controversial spot-kick awarded to Mario Balotelli and the incident sparked a media scrum throughout the rest of the week.

Jose Mourinho suggested the referees would ‘try to balance it out’ by doing Roma a favour this weekend and indeed Philippe Mexes avoided giving away a spot-kick for a handling offence.

“I don’t think it was ‘compensation.’ If there was a penalty for Udinese, then [referee Paolo] Tagliavento made a mistake in not awarding it,” mused Vucinic.

De Rossi, who was deferred to the Disciplinary Commission for his statements after that Inter game, took his protests too far again on the field and was red carded.

“Some things do get said on the pitch,” assured teammate Vincenzo Montella. “Some referees pretend not to hear, others keep an ear out. He could’ve avoided the red card, as I didn’t hear any insults.”
