Mauri on the move?
Tuesday 4 March, 2008

Stefano Mauri's agent Tiziano Gonzaga believes that his client could leave Lazio in the summer.

The former Udinese player is frustrated with the Biancocelesti after starting only 13 games this season and needs playing time to get back into the Italy squad.

Mauri was instrumental in Lazio's qualification for the Champions League last season and has expressed a desire to stay, but it's uncertain if that will be the case.

“Two weeks ago I met with Claudio Lotito regarding Mauri's contract, but perhaps it is better if we postpone the talks,” Gonzaga explained.

Rumored problems in the dressing room between Delio Rossi and a number of players including Mauri could hasten a break between the 28-year-old and the Aquilotti.

Gonzaga moved tentatively to deny talk of a rift, stressing: “There is a great respect between Rossi and the player, but it has not been said that a change of Coach will coincide with the sale of Mauri.

“Last year Juventus came forward for Mauri, but we told them no, making it known that we would prefer to remain with Lazio. I don't know if the Bianconeri are still interested.”

Gonzaga also sought to protect the central midfielder from criticism of his private life.

“Allegations regarding his habits off the pitch are the stuff of urban legend. He has had physical problems and has not been at his best.”
