Beckham has Moore to give
Sunday 29 March, 2009

David Beckham has spoken of his pride at beating Bobby Moore’s caps record and is ready to accept a substitute role for England.

The Milan man set a new all-time tally with 109 caps for an outfield player when he came off the bench in Saturday’s 4-0 friendly win over Slovakia.

"Obviously it is a very special occasion for myself, to reach this amount of caps and to be up there just above Bobby Moore," Beckham told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"I am very proud of that, but the most important thing was the way we played and the performance we put in. Overall, it's a good night for myself but a better night for the team."

Becks set up Wayne Rooney’s goal in the friendly triumph and confirmed the fine form that has seen him shine at San Siro.

"It's what I've done throughout my career. If I get a chance, there's players like Rooney, Emile Heskey or Peter Crouch on the end of it. If I can assist in that way, then great."

One of the main reasons behind his insistence on leaving LA Galaxy for Milan until the end of the season was to earn his place in Fabio Capello’s England squad for the 2010 World Cup.

The 34-year-old may well be used in the side, but is also considering a bench role to begin with.

"Substitutes can be very important in the game. Everybody wants to start for England. If I start, then I start, if I don't, then I'm part of a good team going forward.

"The target is just to play, be involved in every game possible. I have already said I'd love to play in another World Cup - or two - but we will have to wait and see. That is a long way away at the moment."

Beckham extended the loan spell in Serie A until June, when he will return to LA Galaxy until a clause in his contract allows him to walk away in November.
