Mou starts Scudetto countdown
Sunday 22 March, 2009

Jose Mourinho calculates “there are 20 points to go in order to secure the Scudetto” and explains what's needed for European success.

“We are very satisfied with today's win. I have always said it is better to be leaders than chasing, because this gives you the relaxed knowledge you only have to focus on your own result,” he said after a 3-0 demolition of Reggina.

“A few weeks ago I said we were missing 29 points to secure the Scudetto, but now it is 20. That is our privilege to win important home games and go into the break with this advantage.”

Serie A takes a week off for international duty and the Nerazzurri are seven points clear of Juventus.

“Juve have nothing more than us, if anything they are seven points less. This is the objective way of looking at it.

“Juventus fight and struggle together as a team, but they are not more of a 'team' unit than Inter. We are together at all times and can face any obstacle. For example, I've never seen a side with nine different pairs of central defenders in one season.

“We got off to a great start today and could've sealed it after 30 minutes. Reggina played their game and Julio Cesar needed some very difficult saves. A 3-0 scoreline might make some think he was on vacation, but that's not the case.”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic bagged a brace for his 19th goal of the season, taking him to the top of the scorers' charts.

“I don't think he needs to change anything to be just as decisive in Europe as he is in Serie A,” continued Mourinho.

“I understand where he's coming from, that he has won a great deal in Italy and nothing in Europe, but there are only two or three teams challenging for a title. In the Champions League there are 10 able to win it and all of a very high quality.”

The Coach is already planning the changes that need to be made in order to lift Inter to that standard.

“Maybe we are missing a great creative figure, a classic No 10, but I must admit I get tired just watching our midfield work so hard.

“To make Inter competitive in Europe we need some adjustments. We have two or three young players with remarkable potential who in a couple of years will be champions.

“We have a stable group of players, but personally I like to follow both paths - the one that takes us to the top players and the one that helps rejuvenate the squad.”
