The next Italian Super Cup between Inter and Lazio will be played in the legendary Birds’ Nest Stadium in Beijing.
The match between Scudetto winners and Coppa Italia victors traditionally kicks off the new Italian season.
It will be hosted by Beijing on August 8, the precise one-year anniversary of the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympic Games.
As the number ‘8’ is thought to bring good luck in China, it will once again kick off at 8pm on the eighth day of the eighth month.
“The date and time have a significant meaning as recognition for the Lega Calcio and Italian football towards the Olympic movement, celebrating the first anniversary of the opening ceremony,” read a statement released by the Lega Calcio.
This is certainly not the first time that the Italian Super Cup has been played abroad, as it is seen as an opportunity to advertise calcio and allow fans in other countries to see their heroes up close.
Recent outings have included Tripoli in 2002 and New York in 2003.
