Fabio Cannavaro could receive special dispensation to sit on the bench for Italy, though Andrea Barzagli assures he’ll take care of business on the pitch.
The World Cup winning captain has been forced out of Euro 2008 after damaging ankle ligaments during a training ground collision with Giorgio Chiellini, but insisted on staying with the squad throughout the tournament.
Cannavaro does not have clearance to sit on the bench during games, but there are reports they could work their way around the rules.
UEFA might allow Cannavaro to be the 23rd man if the squad left one player in the stands for tonight’s match against Holland.
Meanwhile, his place in central defence should be filled by Barzagli and Inter’s Marco Materazzi.
“It was a tough blow losing Fabio, not just because he is our captain, but also a great leader,” explained new Wolfsburg signing Barzagli.
“Now we have to roll our sleeves up and focus on the team. Tension is high and we hope to do well on our debut.
“It is only right that I should feel responsibility, but I must also try to stay calm so I can give my best. I have a good rapport with all the other defenders, they are all great players.”
Italy have a tough task ahead in the so-called Group of Death along with Holland, France and dark horses Romania.
“We are among the favourites because we are the world champions, but we need the same hunger as two years ago if we are to go all the way again,” continued the former Palermo star.
“It will be important to get off to a strong start against Holland. They have such a fearsome midfield and attack.”
