Juventus director of sport Alessio Secco is excited about new signing Diego and believes the Brazilian can take the club to the next level.
The 24-year-old former Santos youngster joined the Bianconeri from Werder Bremen last month for a fee of around £24.5m.
We worked on bringing him here for a long time. When there was a unanimous decision between the directors and the technical staff - Claudio Ranieri included - we took action, Secco told Il Corriere dello Sport.
At the decisive moment, Bayern Munich inserted themselves into the deal and they were not alone. Negotiations then became much more difficult.
At a certain point I feared we could lose him, Secco revealed. Luckily it turned out well in the end.
When asked if Diego will represent value for money at £24.5m, Secco replied: The figure is important, but we certainly think so, considering the age of the player. He is one of the few players in a position to make a difference.
Secco then defended his decision to bring Fabio Cannavaro back from Real Madrid even though he is 36.
Fabio will cover the defence for at least a year. He is captain of Italy, he had a lot of desire to return to Juve and accepted economic terms inferior to those offered him elsewhere.
This morning Juventus goalkeeper Gigi Buffon expressed his happiness at the way things are progressing in the transfer market and Secco believes a new Old Lady is gradually being built.
In the last few years we have always exceeded our expectations, he said. This season we finished second. Our hope is to improve. Competitiveness is growing within the squad.
Juventus, by definition, focus on the top. But what Ferrara said is right. We will make no predictions and keep our objectives to ourselves, Secco concluded.
