De Canio's Lecce U-Turn
Sunday 7 June, 2009

Despite their relegation into Serie B, Lecce have opted to continue with Coach Gigi De Canio at the helm.

The former QPR boss was only brought in to replace Mario Beretta on March 9, but failed to turn their season around.

Nonetheless, the club announced this weekend that is has “reached an agreement to continue this relationship with the Coach.”

It is a particular surprise, as straight after the 4-1 defeat at Genoa sent them to certain relegation, he had announced he wanted to quit.

“I thank Lecce and in particular President [Rico] Semeraro for the great respect and consideration shown to me,” De Canio had said on May 31.

“In this week I had time to think and decided to evaluate possibilities that will keep me in the top flight.”

Instead he has agreed to drop down into Serie B and help Lecce get back into the top tier of Italian football.

De Canio began his management career at Pisticci in 1989, going on to Savoia, Siena, Carpi, Lucchese and Pescara.

He made the jump into Serie A with Udinese in 1999, then Napoli, Reggina, Genoa, Siena and a brief English experience for QPR.
