Napoli look poised to beat several other teams to the signature of Inter's veteran centre-forward Julio Cruz.
The Argentine, who will be 35 in October, is currently out of contract and surplus to requirements in Milan.
Napoli are in the market for a target man, who can hold the ball up and assist Fabio Quagliarella and Ezequiel Lavezzi.
They face stiff competition from Fiorentina, who have also registered an interest in the former Bologna striker, who has scored more than 100 goals in Italy.
Napoli appear to have the edge over their rivals because they have a deep association with Argentine football, stretching back to 1984 when they signed Diego Maradona.
The Partenopei have been ambitious in the transfer market this summer.
They have already signed Fabio Quagliarella, Luca Cigarini, Juan Zuniga and Hugo Campagnaro.
