Canna in injury scare
Monday 2 June, 2008

The Azzurri may have been dealt a huge injury blow in their first training session in Austria after Fabio Cannavaro left the field on a stretcher.

Roberto Donadoni’s squad only arrived in their camp in Baden this morning, but they have already been struck by misfortune during today’s session at Admira Wacker’s ground.

Skipper Cannavaro went to ground after a 50-50 with Juventus stopper Giorgio Chiellini and looked in severe discomfort.

A stretcher was needed to take the Real Madrid man to the dressing room and he will undergo tests this evening to ascertain the severity of the problem.

More details should be known later this evening or tomorrow, but Donadoni will have until June 8 to decide whether he needs to replace his captain.

As long as a neutral FIFA doctor judges that an injured player is unable to take part on the competition, one change can be made to the squad 24 hours before the first game.

Fiorentina defender Alessandro Gamberini would be the most likely stand-in and will be on the edge of his seat.
