Recoba invites Bologna bid
Sunday 29 June, 2008

Alvaro Recoba has rejected a big money move to Qatar so he can regain his spot in the national side and could achieve that at Bologna.

The Inter veteran’s contract expires on July 1 and he won’t be renewing after a decade at San Siro, nor staying on at Torino following his loan spell.

“My contract is up and I have not spoken to Massimo Moratti about my future. I have been at Inter for 11 years, practically a lifetime in football terms, and the idea of leaving does make me sad. It’s like leaving home for the first time. If Moratti asked me to stay, then I’d immediately say yes, but I don’t think he will.”

Recoba is not part of new Coach Jose Mourinho’s plans, but the 32-year-old is not ready for a graceful retirement.

“I would like to continue playing in Serie A and this is one of the reasons why I have not yet made a decision,” revealed Chino.

“Some of my teammates at Torino spoke very highly of Palermo. They said the city and the fans are magnificent with a real South American feel.

“I must also confess that I cheered on Bologna in the last Serie B season. The city and the fans have always brought me good luck. I admit I’d love to join Bologna.”

It seems the club has been listening, as the Rossoblu are looking for a big name to celebrate their promotion.

So far they have been linked with Russia’s Euro 2008 star Roman Pavlyuchenko and Celtic’s Shunsuke Nakamura, but Recoba would also fit the bill, especially as he is willing to accept a pay cut.

“If my motivation had been lacking then I would have accepted the move to Qatar, where I have been courted for two years with contracts fit for a King,” he continued.

“I am ready to return to my national team, but do not want favours from anyone. It is time that Uruguay went back to being one of the top sides in the world and I want to be there with them in 2010.”
